Images from the Scott Expedition 1911. Robert Scott tried for the south pole unsuccessfully in 1903. In this better funded expedition, 8 years later he found himself racing against Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian to get to the pole first. Scott arrived at the pole only to find that he was beaten by Amundsen, by a matter of weeks. Scott and his party perished on the return journey. After travelling 1600 miles he died only 11 miles from food and shelter. Herbert Ponting was on the Scott expedition of 1911. His work there is seen by many as his best.
